A meeting of the Stowe Historic Preservation Commission (SHPC) was held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 in the Akeley Memorial Building starting at approximately 5:30 pm.
Members Present: Sam Scofield, Chair, Tim Meehan, Cindy McKechnie, Gordon Dixon, and Barbara Baraw
MembersAbsent: Chris Carey
Staff Present: Richard Baker, Zoning Director
Project 3986: Owner: Duplex LLC, Replacement of Sky Lights
John Steele presented the application. He explained he was replacing three skylights on the Malt Shop building and that the skylights were 30 3/8" x 46 3/8", which is several inches larger than the existing skylights. He presented photographs of the existing skylights and a cut sheet for the new skylights. Mr. Meehan moved to recommend approval as submitted and to classify the project as a minor modification. The motion was approved 5-0.
Project 3910: Owner: Trapp Family Lodge, Modification of Previously Approved Façade and Addition
John Steele presented the application. He explained that he constructed different doors than approved due to building code restrictions. He also said that that another vent hood was constructed on the roof and two vents were constructed on the front of the addition. Mr. Baker discovered the changes when completing a Certificate of Occupancy. The Commission found that, as constructed, the addition did not meet the requirements of Section 10.12(2) 4 that requires additions to be constructed with similar or compatible material types and Section 10.14 (7) that requires ventilation systems to be placed on the rear, side or top of buildings and to be screened from public view. The consensus of the Commission was that staining the siding to match the existing siding would satisfy Section 10.12(2) 4 and that the front vents could be screened from public view with some landscaping. Mr. Meehan moved to recommend approval and to classify the project as a minor modification with conditions that:
·That siding shall be modified to match the existing siding
·That landscaping shall be added to shield the view of the vents.
The motion was approved 5-0. Mr. Baker stated he would issue a 4-month temporary Certificate of Occupancy to allow the work to be completed this summer.
Review of Proposed Sheds for the Mayo Field
The Mayo field management plan requires that all new construction on the Mayo fields be reviewed by the SHPC. Two photographs of potential sheds for construction on the soccer field were submitted for review. Ms. Baraw moved to recommend approval of shed marked as alternative #1 (shed without windows). The motion was approved 4-0 with Mr. Dixon abstaining due to involvement with the soccer program and potential personal benefit of not having to store numerous soccer balls at his residence.
Approval of Minutes
The 3/4/09 minutes were approved as submitted.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 6:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Richard Baker, Zoning Director
