Utilities in Southern States, and now also New England States, including Vermont, are warning of a new telephone scam. Numerous customers have been reporting that they received a phone call from the “Billing Department” or “Collection Department” of their local utility company, threatening disconnection of utilities due to a delinquency on their account.
Stowe Electric was alerted today, December 3, 2014, by a local commercial ratepayer in good standing that he received a phone call from a person claiming to work in the Billing Department of Stowe Electric Department. The ratepayer was then “informed” by this scammer that he was scheduled to be shut-off today at 12:30 pm due to a past-due amount on his account unless he pays via a credit card over the phone immediately.
Power utilities do not randomly call customers in this way. Warnings via telephone are rare and only a last resort after repeated disconnection notices are sent by regular mail. Stowe Electric furthermore usually posts a disconnect notice on a delinquent ratepayer's door before disconnecting service. If you are in doubt, please hang up immediately and call Stowe Electric Department at our main phone number (802) 253-7215 during the hours of 8 am to 4 pm.
